The current standard NBR 9952 – Asphalt blanket with armor for waterproofing – Requirements and test methods – includes 4 types of blankets: I, II, III and IV.

Each has specific parameters related to thickness, tensile strength, water absorption, low temperature flexibility, impact resistance, static puncture, drainage, dimensional stability, accelerated aging and flexibility after accelerated aging.

Thus, the choice of each type depends on the characteristics of the work. Another important detail is the finish: it can be made of polyethylene, aluminum, geotextile, slate, etc.

What is asphalt blanket?

The asphalt blanket is made with modified asphalt material – plus elastomers, plastomers or polymers to ensure more durability and greater elasticity -, armed with various materials, the most common of which are polyethylene film, polyester, rubber and glass fibers.

These structuring materials have their own attributes, which can give the asphalt blanket greater resistance to perforation, or lower cost, or greater resistance to puncture, among other properties.

The polymers added to the asphalt, in addition to guaranteeing the performance of the asphalt blanket, also give it unique characteristics, with some offering greater resistance to UV rays, while others providing greater elasticity and resistance.

For this reason, the correct specification of the asphalt blanket for each area is essential for the success of waterproofing. Its weight, thickness, elongation and strength characteristics are predefined during manufacture.
