THE IMPORTANCE OF GUTTERS AND RUFFLES
Gutters and flashings are essential elements in any construction project. But, before purchasing them, it is necessary to carefully analyze the installation location and its specificities, as the market is varied and a model will not always be suitable for the same situations.
Gutters
They are the channels responsible for collecting rainwater that flows through the roofs and slabs of buildings. They are usually made of galvanized steel, which is coated with a layer of zinc to prevent corrosion.
The characteristics vary according to the length, type of tile, waterfall and other aspects of the installation site. The main function is to protect and prevent damage: the channels must conduct the water in a controlled manner so that it does not cause flooding or excessive humidity in the environment.
There are different types of gutters and each has a function. The most common on the market is PVC: very practical when cleaning, it can be found in construction material stores. However, it may not be the most recommended for buildings where there is a need to collect a large level of water.
Aluminum ones are the most suitable for this situation, as they are solid and resistant. They look different from traditional gutters and have a better finish: they can be applied with paint and will not rust.
In addition to these models, there are also floor gutters, used for draining water from yards, swimming pools and other wettable areas.
Ruffles
They are molded and fixed in certain points of a residence and serve to prevent water from infiltrating the walls and walls. If this happens, over time dark spots start to appear in the construction and cause a bad smell, mold and even the rotting of masonry walls.
The flashings are usually made with metal plate and fixed with rivets or nails, in addition to a layer of mortar on the edge to ensure the sealing.
Like gutters, flashings can also be found in different models. The most common are the drip tray (which serves to deflect rain water, preventing it from running down the wall), the cover (the drip dishes are on both sides), and the external and internal (placed between the meeting points of walls and roofs).
Inspecting gutters and flashings
The ideal time to assess whether gutters and flashings are working correctly is during heavy rain. If the water flow is not running properly, the gutter may be blocked by leaves or dirt, or there may be a structural problem that needs correction or even replacement with a new gutter.
In the case of flashings, check whether the walls are stained or peeled and that the water flow from the roof is normal, as obstructions, cracks or the wrong positioning of the material may also occur.
