THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASPHALT BLANKET AND SELF-ADHESIVE ASPHALT TAPE

Sometimes confusion can happen with the two products. But now you will know well the usefulness of each one of them.

Asphalt Blanket

Asphalt blankets form a flexible and prefabricated waterproofing system and are made with modified asphalt based on polymers and structural agents in polyester or polyethylene.

The current technical standard for this material is ABNT NBR 9952 – Asphalt Blanket with Armor for Waterproofing – Requirements and Test Methods, divides the product into some different types depending on specific parameters and values, such as thickness, water absorption, low temperature flexibility, among others. In general, its use is indicated for slabs, reservoirs, planters, slope walls, cold areas, among others. The blanket is usually sold in 1 x 10 m rolls.

Finishes may vary, it is possible to have a finished blanket with Aluminum, Polyethylene, Geotextile, Sand, Slate, etc.

Self-adhesive Asphalt Tape

The multipurpose self-adhesive tapes are composed of asphalt adhesive and have aluminized film finish. It can also be found in color Terracotta. ABNT published the standard ABNT NBR 16411: 2015 – Asphalt tape

self-adhesive, prepared by the Brazilian Waterproofing Committee (ABNT / CB-22). It is available in different sizes such as 5/10/15/20/30/45/60 and 90 cm x 10 m in length.

It is indicated for application on several types of surfaces such as fiber cement, mortar, concrete and metals. When buying, check the area where the material will be applied. Asphalt tapes are indicated only for areas with lesser demands.
